Manga Readers

After a few hours scouring the internet for the best way to get my manga on a nook, which I currently want above all else, I lapsed into my usual searches. You know the ones I mean, where you’ve searched the same thing several times just to see if you can get a better or more recent answer? Unless I’m the only one that does this, which is entirely possible.

One of my favorite searches involves my two favorite things – my Android MyTouch 4g, and Manga. I prefer the area where the two overlap – the wonderful world of Android Manga readers. In the year since I’ve had my phone, I’ve tried several. Before, with my iPod Touch, I had relied on an app called MangaDL, which (thanks to jailbreaking) I was able to dig into and change the files to allow me to download mangas that the app had blocked, which was anything US licensed and therefore anything worth reading.

When I finally got my phone, it seemed like the world was at my fingertips, but with more options came more failures. Thus, I did what everyone in my generation does when they have a question. I googled it. The answers I got back were less than satisfactory. Though I ended up with some good suggestions, it seemed that most articles and reviews that offered a comparison were completely out-of-date. Some of the most relevant pages came up from months or even years ago. New apps were completely disregarded, and the old ones were usually reviews on older versions.

Still, I don’t like making my own opinions – I’m the kind of person who likes to have someone else do it for me when it comes to certain things. I wanted to hear why one app was better than the rest, but ended up with a slew off apps that tried to do the same job without a real decision as to which one was absolutely perfect for me.

So for all those who are like me, and want a review that isn’t outdated or irrelevant, I’ve decided to write my own reviews. I’ll try and get to every app on the market, and by then I assume I’ll have plenty to do with editing reviews, and writing reviews on new apps.

This will probably go on a new blog, to preserve sortofazombie as an outlet for my ideas. I just wanted to let anyone who might stumble across this learn of my plans(:

Oh. My. GAWD.
A teenage girl is whining about something? Say it isn’t so! Is this real life?

Yep, I’m about to start complaining about the cruel injustices of my privileged American life. Buckle up. 😛

MANGA.

I read it constantly, as I’ve said before in multiple posts. Most of what I read is Shounen(Shonen), as in, made for boys around the age of 12.  They’re just more worthwhile in my opinion, as the girl counterpart, Shoujo(Shojo), is filled with too much gush and not enough kicking.

But what bugs me about Shounen is how the girls are portrayed. More often than not, the relationships in these particular mangas are not blatant. Let’s face it, little boys don’t really start wanted to read about romance. No biggie, my writermind will serve up some fanfiction that can most definitely fill the void.

But the girls in Shounen are especially…well… annoying. They whine and complain almost constantly, usually serving to make stupid comments and act as damsels in distress. Even when they are given the ability to defend themselves, they nearly always need to be rescued by a male heroine. In shounen, the girls always care too much about romance and too much about their appearance. Honestly, if you’re about to fight some guy, the way your hair is styled shouldn’t be your first concern.

To make things even more frustrating, they are drawn completely unrealistically. Most mangakas (manga artist) even include the measurements of the main female characters, penning them as 37-21-33″ (Nami – One Piece) 37-23-36″ (Lucy, Fairy Tale) 38E-24-34″ (Orihime, Bleach).

Honestly, I don’t even think it’s possible to have that small of a waist yet gigantic boobs. I don’t think the mangakas realize how painful that would be – seriously, plenty of my friends have C’s or D’s and complain about back pain and how it hurts to run.

S0, just to sum up this rant: Shonen manga makes most females moronic, helpless, tiny and huge-breasted. I assume that’s because that would be the “ideal” female.

Well guys, (you too mangaka’s) good luck finding someone that fits that profile without having implants, back problems, and waaay out of your league(:

I was sidetracked from reading my manga for a few hours by the usual draw of television and MS Word. But at around midnight, I got back into the swing of things. In fact, I’ve knocked out two volumes of One Piece so far.

It’s really getting interesting, what with secret identities surfacing and the all-powerful cliffhanger.

I only had volumes 7 and 8 checked out, and I’m still in a MangaMood, so I’ll probably end up reading the next few chapters online, at least until I get back to school and can pick up the next volumes from the library. I definitely prefer reading them on paper, but reading them from my laptop is just as good. I only resort to using my phone if I have to be mobile, since I (tragically) lack a tablet.

I like One Piece because it’s silly and childish, much less serious and complicated than Death Note. Then again, it was (along with most of the Manga  I read) written for 10 – 15 year old boys. It’s not my fault the young guy stuff is sooo much more interesting than the drivel written for my gender.

It’s about this guy who wants to be the pirate king, Monkey D. Luffy, who ate the fruit of the Gum Gum Tree, and developed the powers to stretch his body like rubber. I’m not making this up. It’s a pretty interesting read, though I’m still in the beginnings of the series (I have like 200+ chapters left until I catch up).

As with all manga, I have developed a sort of….erm….crush on one of the characters. Don’t think of me as a crazy freak, I’m not having wet dreams about these guys or anything, and I know they’re not real. It’s just – my teen girl writer mind loves to think up little stories on the spot, and when I read books or watch movies, my brain creates fanfiction on many of the characters, just because it comes naturally to me.

At this point, I’m really just hoping none of them go insane (*cough*Light Yagami*cough*)

Hmm… that’s all I really have to say about that. I think I’m going to write a manga rant, but I want to be able to file it solely under my “Rants” category so I’ll finally have something there.

Hasta La Vista Bebes ❤

I love writing, and this idea just came to me. I doubt it will be continued, let alone finished, but I guess it can serve as a little sample of my writing or something(:

The dress was beautiful. Black silk, draped perfectly over every curve. It left just enough to the imagination. The sash was a creamy white, matching the ribbon that decorated my own ebony locks. I looked exquisite. Unrivaled in looks and of course, in rank.

My hair was up in a curly bun of sorts, with soft tendrils that had been beaded with tiny pearls. My shoes were black as well, and the delicate straps would stand out against my pale skin.

“Mother…how do I look?” I asked softly, raising my violet eyes to meet hers. Of course, they were the same shade – It was what had made father choose her as his companion. She was the luckiest of the land, with deep purple irises that had made her the envy of countless other women.

“Nice,” was all she said, turning to fiddle with some leftover ribbon. I tried not to be hurt – my mother never was one for showing emotion. Though it was acceptable in private, I don’t think she ever was able to take off her reserved public face.

My maid, Elsa, gave me a smile, showing crooked yellowed teeth that simply didn’t fit her pretty face.

“You look beautiful mistress,” she insisted, adding another stroke of makeup only my already perfect skin. “Erik will be willing to give away his own legs to have you for his own.”

My heart fluttered. Erik was a family acquaintance. He was dashingly handsome and obscenely rich – just what I liked in a suitor.

“Let’s hope he keeps his appendages and the bulk of his estate,” my mother, ever serious, cut in. “It would be unfortunate indeed if he was crippled, and even worse if he was poor.” I rolled my eyes, but nodded in understanding. She was right.

“Father would never allow me to marry anyone who was lacking in either status or money.” I reminded mother softly, wincing as Elsa pulled the laces of my corset with all her might. The dress, still on its form, had an impossibly tapered waist, so it was necessary to force my body to comply.

“Of course he wouldn’t,” mother agreed. “It would look shameful to the family.”

I nodded again, gasping for air as another maid began tugging with Elsa, constricted my body even further. After a minute of inspection, they fitted me with the dress. My mother offered a nod of approval, so the maids sent for my father.

“You will make the perfect prize for any man,” he said with a smile, and I couldn’t help but grin back happily. It was everything I had ever hoped to be.

“Have you decided whom I will wed?” I asked, brimming with excitement. He only gave me a knowing smile. Over the past year, I’d heard rumors of many men (young and old) that had come to proposition father for my hand in marriage.

He laughed, his eyes twinkling with the secret that I wasn’t privy to. I pouted, though I was only playing along, but soon broke into a smile again. We both knew Erik was the best choice by far. Handsome, rich, from a loyal high class family – he was everything that my father had been looking for in my future husband.

Suddenly the door was thrust opened, and an old servant stepped inside.

“Sir!” he said, bowing deeply. “The guests are beginning to arrive.” He was staring straight ahead, and although it was against the rules, I tried to meet his eyes with my own. It was a game I had played since I was younger. Until recently, even my personal maids weren’t “worthy” of meeting my eyes. Like any young girl, I craved friendship that I couldn’t have.

“Good,” my father said, his personality reverting to it’s harsh public face. I frowned slightly, but was careful to keep my face almost entirely devoid of emotion.

Then the world stopped. I had turned to look back at the soldier, and to my surprise, his eyes met mine. They were soft and brown, like a piece of milk chocolate that had been melted to perfection.

“HOW DARE YOU!” My father boomed, and I flinched back in shock and surprise.

“I’m sorry sir, I –“

“YOU KNOW THE RULES, SWINE.” My father growled, grabbing the elderly man by the collar and dragging him from the room.

I could heard thuds and cries in the hallway outside my room, and my stomach twisted. I didn’t know my glance could evoke such punishment. I wanted to apologize, but that was forbidden as well. I simply had to sit there and try not to think about what was happening to the poor man who had the misfortune of looking into my eyes.

My father returned a moment later, looking flustered. I offered him a weak smile, and he grinned warmly back at me.

“I will see you at dinner, then, my little princess.” He gave me a tiny kiss on the forehead before leaving the room, my mother trailing along after him in her elegant purple gown.

My maids, silent until this moment, began whispering to each other about my dress, jointly deciding where the pins should go and other such matters.

I tried to focus on the party, on the news of my engagement, which would surely be announced, but all I could think of was the brown eyes of the servant, and of how they didn’t remind me of dirt and filth like they should’ve.

Love you.

Love this town.

Love this mother lovin’ truck that keeps on breaking lovin’ down.

That songs been stuck in my head all day. It’s the best, really. If you haven’t heard it, go buy it on iTunes or, if you’re lacking the morals department, illegally download it or something.

Really, I just wanted to blog a little bit more about Death Note, since I just finished it. But I wanted to continue titled based on the subject matter, and two “Death Note <3” ‘s in a row in a blog only 3 entries long seemed kind of stupid.

But yeah, I finished the series. In the end, Light was captured just like I knew he would be, but he ended up going like crazy. He kind of just ranted on the floor, dying and whatnot. So he lost some of his appeal there. Near replaced L, and according to the one shot that tells the epilogue or whatever, he isn’t at all interested in solving a new Death Note case, as he was only interested in the case because the real L had been.

Oh, and his name was Nate River.
Fabuloso.

…So now I’m going to read One Piece. I should read my history book or do some math homework, but I honestly don’t see that happening. 😛

Death Note <3

In case you’re not aware, Death Note is a Japanese manga that came out around 2009.

In case you’re not aware, manga (Mon-guh) is essentially a comic book. It’s printed in black and white, and read from right to left. It’s one of my many nerdy obsessions, followed by miscellaneous fanfiction, books about werewolves, and the infamously dramatic TeenNick show, Degrassi.

As far as manga goes, Death Note is a good one. I read it translated into English of course, since I am completely clueless when it comes to those weird little Japanese symbol things. I am currently reading several manga, such as the “Big Three” Naruto, Bleach, and One Piece, as well as other popular titles such as Fairy Tale. Any others besides these few mentioned are only read up to a few chapters and aren’t really worth mentioning.

But I digress…(I’m a leading man, and the lies I weave are oh so intricate <3)

Death Note is extremely interesting, very detailed, and it makes you think. In all honestly, I think it would make a pretty good movie or novel. While most manga rely heavily on their cartoons to fill space and keep the reader’s attention, Death Note only uses it’s images to help support the text, not to offer a crutch.

It would be useless for me to try and explain the entire plot, and I simply don’t care to try. Make a jump over to Wikipedia or something if you wish, or don’t.

All I really wanted to say was that I agree with Kira. Honestly, those that he kills using his Death Note deserve to die. He doesn’t kill those who have atoned for their crimes, or who committed a crime by accident; rather, he kills those who are killers or rapists or murderers. I don’t understand why people want to end his reign. It’s as if they don’t want the world to be at least semi-peaceful, and prefer chaos and crime. It’s just…stupid

*SPOILER ALERT*

I already know Light is Kira, and that Near is going to kill him, but I can’t help but hope that he somehow escapes his fate. However, the story’s already done and there’s nothing that I can do to change what I’m about to read. So curse you, Tsugumi Ohba, for making the righteous character into the antagonist and killing him off in the end. You suck. D:<

So it turns out he’s one of my favorite comedians.

Even though he’s fat fluffy. My bad guys.

But yeah, he makes me damn near piss myself. I used to think he was annoying, but now it appears that his brand of humor fits my comic needs exactly.

It looks like he’s joined the ranks of Nick Swardson, Bo Burnham, Demetri Martin, and Anthony Jezelnik. High fives and tequila shots all around.

…Just kidding, I don’t drink. Not by my own choice, but just because my dad is crazy protective and would catch me drunk in a heartbeat. Unlucky me.

But I digress.

Basically, Gabriel Iglesias is funny as fuck and I love him and Comedy Central in general. It (thankfully) kept me from killing myself over this Thanksgiving, simply because family gatherings destroy me from the inside out.

So this Thanksgiving, I’m thankful for the wonderful comedians of Comedy Central.

P.S: Also my family, friends, and boyfriend are pretty cool I guess so thanks for them to…But still, I’m mainly sending props to good ole channel 249. 😀
